The software checks whether the naming conventions are adhered to and it signals it as necessary. The following restrictions apply:

- A part of a name within the device name, i.e. a string between two points, must be max. 63 characters long.
- No special characters such as Umlaut, brackets, underscore, slash, blank etc. The hyphen is the only permitted special character.
- The device name must not include upper case characters.
- The device name must not start with the characters "-" or ".", and it must not end with these characters.
- The device name must not start with digits.
- The device name must not have the form n.n.n.n ( n = 0…999 ).
- The device name must not start with the string "port-xyz-" ( x,y,z = 0…9 ).
- Device names are assigned to the PROFINET IO devices during commissioning.
